Bank of Åland Plc
Ålandsbanken (Bank of Åland) was founded 1919 by Åland entrepreneurs of the time who wanted their own bank on Åland. The name was then Ålands Aktiebank and in 1942 it was registered on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. The development has been stable and favourable. The head office is still located in Mariehamn in Åland, but we have gradually expanded our horizons. First to Helsinki, where we in 1982 were the first bank in Finland to offer the Private Banking service. During the 1990s, after a banking crisis in which the Bank of Åland was the only bank in Finland to survive without bank support, we expanded our operations with as many as seven new offices. Today the Bank of Åland has six offices on the Finnish mainland: in Helsinki, Tampere, Vaasa, Turku, Pargas and Oulu. After the strong establishment in Finland, it felt natural to start looking towards Sweden. We continued our tradition of utilising weak market positions for expansion by establishing ourselves through an acquisition in 2009. This created a platform for our operations in Sweden, which now have offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Our Group has around 1 000 employees and includes our two subsidiaries, all of which have activities closely related to banking.
